Are you sleepwalking through life? 8 reasons setting goals will wake you up

Topics: Support, Mentor, Mentee

You are here because you want to maximise your impact and help to make a sustainable economy.

We are here to help you achieve that.

In this article we give you the reasons why it is important to set goals for your mentorship experience.

You have joined Sustainability Mentors. Check!

You have set your intention or vision for your mentorship experience.  (If not read here)

From that vision, you should be clearer on what you want to achieve.

Now it is time to explore, create and set the goals which are going to fulfill that potential with your mentor/s.

According to Wikipedia the exact definition of a goal is:

A desired result a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development. Many people endeavor to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines.

Why set goals in your mentorship practice?

Laser Focus

Goals give you focus. It is as easy as that. If intention or vision creates overall transformation, then goals give you objects to focus and devote energy to get you there. You might have one overall intention and a few goals which go towards achieving that intension or vision.

Control your destiny

Goals make you conscious of what you are doing. Most people are sleepwalking through life. Goals give you control. When you set goals for yourself you are consciously creating the life that you want. Not following passively what others want you to do.

Ensure success

All successful people set goals. We need you to be successful so that we improve sustainability....quickly!

When you set goals you are holding yourself accountable. You are making sure you progress. You are tracking your progression.

Be like other successful people.

Resilience when times are tough

Goals motivate you because you always know what to do next. This is especially powerful if you sometimes get distracted OR you find you are not in a great place mentally on occasions.

Sometimes you just need some direction to blow out those cobwebs.

Keeps you going

You can measure progress against goals and so this is great positive feedback which keeps you going when time gets tough. I wrote about how mini wins can help you when you need persistence.

Achieve your full potential

Achieve your highest potential. Without goals you will just meander along without any focus. This allows you to exist in your comfort zone. When you are in your comfort zone you are not growing. Goals get your out of your comfort zone and growing!

Overcome procrastination & distraction

If you are anything like me- sometimes- you will let the littlest distraction stop you from making progress. Part of this can be because you let jobs get out of control and become monsters- so you are less likely to tackle them.  When I have goals to work towards you keep a logical assessment of the work required to achieve them. This stops jobs growing into monsters and so keeps you from procrastination and distraction......

Optimize your experience!

Get the most out of life. Life passes us by. Before you know it it will be next year. Or it will be 2020 or 2030!! Goals with specific actions and deadlines ensure you will squeeze every drop of value out of your time here.

And we all know we need you to be working at your maximum to steer us towards a sustainable society.
