The game has changed in the last couple of years though. We now have a critical time factor to achieve sustainability.
This means the goals you were working towards should be reviewed for their relevance.
The mentors on Sustainability Mentors are here to help you do this!
The question is what are the best goals to pursue?
“The question you should be asking isn’t, “What do I want?” or “What are my goals?” but “What would excite me?”
From the vision, you should be clear on what you want to achieve.
From the goals, you start to see how you are going to get to the vision.
Setting goals then gives you the route map to start to have an action plan with milestones you can hit every week or month.
You have read why it is important to set goals.
Now we are going to talk about how to decide which goals to choose.
If you are a regular reader of this blog you know i love a good quote!
“Do you know where you going to? Do you like the things that life is showing you? Where are you going to? Do you know? “ – Diana Ross
Use the vision or intention, you developed with your mentor to inform the goal identification
Write as many potential goals down as possible, which will get you towards your intention. Just let your creativity flow. Don't think about the hows or whys, just get it all down on paper or even better on the wall.
The goals you set need to be right for you. You need to believe in them. They need to match your values. They need to stimulate you.
It is worth bearing in mind that we are in a rush here. We are in a Climate Emergency. So bare this in mind when deciding what goals to choose.
There are many goals you could choose to get you toward your vision. Pick the ones that will bring the most impact in the least time.
What are your values? These are your core beliefs.
What is most important to you? Nature, the sea, family, friends, social inclusion, health, vitality, energy, having a big house, adventure, creativity, football whatever it might be... write it down and let it sit in your mind when you are considering goals.
Unsure what your values are?
If you are working towards something that does not sit right with you then you are not going to be motivated.
We need to concentrate on the skills you have got in order to maximize your impact. You might be good at selling, you might be good at spreadsheets, you might be good at presenting... write a list of what you are good at. Ask your friends. Ask your family. Ask your manager.
What activities do you do where you find time speeds up? Where you get the most joy? Where you feel the most proud of your achievements? Spend some time here and you can start to align this with your goals.
For each proposed goal think a little bit about the journey to get to that goal. What is going to be required. Will you enjoy it? Will you stay motivated? You want to be outside of your comfort zone but it doesn't have to be terribly arduous.
You have had your first "Break The Ice" session with your mentor. You have had your vision /intention session. Now it is time to discuss your goals. Go to your mentor with a rough idea of what goals you think you should go for (use your notes from the above)- and explore with your mentor.
Once you have decided on what your goals are you can then start to develop an action plan. Which we will cover next!
