University of Liverpool embraces reuse with Warp It

One month since launching Warp It as part of Sustainability Week 2025, the University of Liverpool has saved nearly £30,000, as staff embrace reuse.

This represents a five times return on investment in the first four weeks alone.

Not only is Warp It saving the University money, but it's also fostering a circular economy culture with staff keen to 'do the right thing' when it comes to the environment.

Rhiannon Hunt, Circular Economy Manager said.

“Warp It is saving staff time and money, whilst helping to better manage our resources in line with our sustainability strategy. In the current climate, we need to think innovatively and embrace technology to deliver value and affect real change for sustainability. Staff can now gain access to the many resources already held within the University for free, as opposed to purchasing new.”

The University has already made great progress towards its annual targets for Warp It.

  • £27,248 or £50,000 saved
  • 3,137kg of 5,000kg waste avoided
  • 12,605kg of 20,000kg CO2e eliminated
  • 181 of 300 items exchanged
  • 263 of 300 staff members registered

The rollout of Warp It is supported by the Mail and Transport team, who manage the University's central storage facility and transport claimed items across the campus.

Dave Hobson, Mail and Transport Manager, said:

“The team has always done its best to promote reuse of unwanted equipment and furniture collected from the University’s estate, however, this has historically been a time-consuming operation. The launch of Warp It, combined with our new Central Store facility has removed much of the administrative burden, allowing us to focus on efficient transportation and delivery.”

The support provided by Founder, Daniel O'Connor, and Account Manager, Becky Lynch, has been key to the results to date.

The integration of the University's Single Sign On (SSO) function has made the process of accessing and using Warp It seamless and intuitive for all University staff.

Working collaboratively with the Warp It team ahead of the launch also ensured the platform has been effectively integrated with the University's existing systems and processes, including transport and storage.

After more than a decade in operation, there are countless case studies to extract key learnings from, and the downloadable resources available have helped ensure the

University has got the most out of its Warp It subscription right from the start.
The University has opened Warp It up to any unused items provided they meet the following criteria:

  • The item is not an IT issued asset
  • The item is not a data holding device
  • The item does not contain confidential information
  • The item is not (nor is contaminated with) a hazardous substance
  • You have the necessary permissions and authorisation to list the item

This includes furniture, equipment, consumables and stationery.

To date, there have been plenty of exchanges of chairs, tables and drawers, as well as more specialist items, including photography accessories and unused pipette tips.

The next step for the Environmental Sustainability team will be embedding Warp It throughout University processes, including as part of its asset management systems.

Throughout the month of April, the University is running a 'Spring Clean' competition, encouraging staff to list as many items as possible for a chance to win a 'Grow Your Own' herb kit.
