Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust has made significant strides in sustainability, saving over £104,000 in just 18 months by using Warp It to reuse unwanted items.
By reusing unwanted items, the Trust has successfully diverted 17,751 kilograms of waste from landfills and reduced 50,543 kilograms of carbon emissions. This reduction is comparable to planting 69 trees or removing 21 cars from the road.
This outcome aligns perfectly with the Trust’s ambitious net zero carbon goals and supports its Green Plan, which contributes to national and regional NHS targets for carbon reduction, climate action, and broader sustainability initiatives.
The reuse initiative has also engaged over 580 employees out of the Trust's 4,000-strong workforce.
From everyday office furniture and stationery to more unusual discoveries like a piano, electric organ, yo-yo bicycles, a rowing machine, and even a model brain, reuse has breathed new life into many items.
This reuse effort has been particularly useful during the recent relocation of the Trust’s headquarters from Thurmaston to County Hall in Glenfield, helping to efficiently manage and repurpose items amidst the move.
Additionally, many of these items have been donated to local charities, preventing waste and providing much-needed resources to community organisations.
Christopher Manning, Fleet, Logistics and Portering Manager at the Trust, leads the project. He said:
“Like many large organisations, hoarding is common and can lead to cluttered and poor use of storage spaces often resulting in damaged items, and potential health and safety hazards.
“Warp It has been instrumental in helping us clear out spaces, optimise our storage areas, and track all items. It has proven reuse can significantly benefit both environmental and financial goals."
Looking ahead, Christopher is focused on expanding the impact of reuse. Future plans include increasing user participation to at least 1,000 employees, and embedding reuse as a fundamental practice within the Trust ensuring it is prioritised over purchasing new items or disposal.
Christopher concluded:
"Our success with Warp It highlights the transformative potential of reuse. We are eager to continue expanding this initiative to achieve even greater savings and sustainability impacts. The Warp It team has made the process remarkably smooth and effective, and their support has been invaluable in reaching our goals."
