Each day millions of things that could be reused end up being thrown away. The Keep Britain Tidy charity inspires people to end waste now and for future generations.
Its popular Great British Spring Clean initiative returns this year from 15 to 31 March.
It’s the nation's biggest mass-action environmental campaign and a perfect activity to include in the annual Warp It Spring Clean campaign. See our Spring Clean campaign guide.
The good news is that litter-picking is a simple action that anyone can do to make an immediate and visible difference to their area.
85 percent of those who took part last year reported that taking part made them feel more pride in their local area. And 74 percent said it improved their mood.
According to the Keep Britain Tidy website litter is a wasted resource. Each day, around 20 million drinks containers are ‘lost from the loop’, which this means they don’t get recycled.
When plastic bottles, aluminium cans, and glass bottles, which can all be turned in to new drinks vessels, are littered the materials they’re made of are wasted.
Keep Britain Tidy also says that each year, as a country, we spend hundreds of millions of pounds clearing up litter. This money could be better spent on public services like social care and education.
Litter also harms wildlife. The RSPCA receive thousands of calls a year about animals injured or caught up in litter. Removing materials that don’t belong in their natural habitats protects wildlife and marine life.
